National Curry Week: 9th - 15th October 2011
National
Curry Week was started in 1998 to promote the cuisine
and to raise funds for charities concentrating on
hunger, malnourishment and poverty. Now in its 14th
year, National Curry Week 2011, from 9th - 15th
October, for the first time invites not only curry
restaurants, caterers, pubs, canteens etc, all over
Britain but also the curry loving public who wish
to dine at home with a takeaway or a prepared meal.
This year's charity is The Curry Tree Charitable
Fund which, last year, focused on the Pakistan Flood
Disaster Appeal.
Special events during National
Curry Week include a Curry Quiz Night, The Best
Chutney of the Year Challenge; World Poppadom
Tower Record Attempt; Samosa Speed Challenge and
the accolade of 'Curry Capital of Britain' which
in 2010 was won for an amazing fourth time by
Glasgow. In conjunction with local media, 4 restaurants
were chosen to represent each city and then scored
by judges to make up 40% of the marks. The balance
of the marking depended on submissions from city
councils and tourist offices to create a total.
Other awards include 'Customer Restaurant of the
Year' for the restaurant with the most votes from
customers and two Best Signature Dish competitions,
as well as the irreverant 'Currybard of the Year'
title for any who can compose a poem to curry!
