HALAL
DIRECT LAUNCHES HOME DELIVERY SERVICE
(21 November 2004)
Halal
Direct is a new home delivery service providing groceries which
have been prepared in the Islamic way direct to Britain's 1.6 million
Muslims. Claiming to be the first ever service of its kind., it
will supply Bangladeshis and other Muslims living in Britain with
the freshest, finest quality meat, fish and vegetables. The brainchild
of Nurul Islam, an established businessman, Halal Direct is backed
by Islam's Sylhet Foods, a wholesale foodstuffs company which imports
and distributes specialist produce across the country.
He
said of Halal Direct: "I realised there was a niche in the
market for Muslim households who for convenience would like groceries
delivered to their door; so I basically worked on that idea."
Nurul
Islam is one of a growing breed of dynamic young entrepreneurs from
within the Bangladeshi community who, with their energy and vision,
are redefining what it means to be a businessman in Britain today.
He arrived here aged 7, was brought up in London's Kings Cross,
and later graduated in Computer Science. After working for several
years as an IT consultant, Nurul Islam decided to take the plunge
and go it alone. He said: "The day I made a decision to go
it alone in business I knew I would face difficult challenges in
my life but it has been worth it. I wanted my own business and that
dream has come true but not without the hard work!"
Nurul's
first business, Sylhet Foods was aimed initially at the Bangladeshi
market. The total Muslim population in Britain is 1.6 million, of
which 69 percent are from the subcontinent and 17 percent are of
Bangladeshi origin. The Muslim population in London is 607,000,
of which 24 percent are of Bangladeshi origin. With Bangladeshis
owning over 80% of the Indian restaurant businesses around the country,
Islam already had a strong client base with very specific needs
which he could satisfy. Nurul soon achieved his goal of becoming
the top supplier to the retail and catering trade and he now hopes
to achieve the same level of success with his latest venture, Halal
Direct.
