Government launches 'Public Leaders' Development
Courses |
The
UK Government has opened applications for
'Public Leaders' training & development
courses that will run from February 2010 onwards.
Designed to encourage under-represented groups
- like women, ethnic minorities and the disabled
- to consider joining a Public Body, the courses
will offer 300 applicants the chance to develop
their skills & obtain mentoring advice.

| Oxfam
recalls fifth anniversary of the Asian tsunami |
By
the fifth anniversary of the 2004 Asian tsunami,
26 December 2009, international agency Oxfam
will close the last few remaining tsunami
aid projects having helped approximately 2.5
million people. The tsunami response was the
largest aid effort Oxfam has ever undertaken
in its 67-year history. 2.5 million people
were helped, 10,800 wells, 2,900 houses, 102
schools, 31 bridges built and 100 km of roads
cleared and constructed.

Scottish Minority Ethnic Award Winners 2009 |
The
Young Scottish Minority Ethnic Awards returned
once again to celebrate the successes of individuals
from diverse ethnic backgrounds who have inspired
others, as well as positively contributing
to life in Scotland. Guests at this year's
ceremony, held in Glasgow on 14 December 2009,
included Minister for Housing and Communities,
Alex Neil MSP.

many re-appointments in Public Sector discriminating
against British Asians |
An
excessive number of re-appointments in the
UK Public Sector are preventing British Asians
from getting their first public appointment
claims the Hindu Council UK. It has published
a list of re-appointments in the past year
showing that the majority of UK's NDPBs are
re-appointing board directors far too frequently;
paying them too much and signing them up for
far too long.

As
part of The Hindu Council (HCUK) Public Appointments
Strategy launched today (10 December 2009),
the organisation has released a list of Hindu
Public Appointees in Britain. HCUK hopes to
improve the representation of this community
at the highest levels in the public sector.
This list features current Board Members of
UK Public Bodies from the Hindu community.

Council UK launches its Public Appointments
Strategy |
The
Hindu Council (HCUK), the UK's largest representative
body for Britain's 560,000 Hindus, today launched
its Public Appointments Strategy to help improve
the representation of this entrepreneurial
community at the highest levels in the public
sector. Spearheaded by successful Interim
Manager Dilip Joshi MBE, the 12-strong HCUK
Public Appointments Taskforce has already
met with major government departments.

Achievers Awards 2009 |
The
ninth annual Asian Achievers Awards, as organised
by the Asian Business Publications Group,
were celebrated on Thursday 3rd December 2009
at Wembley Stadium in London. Over 750 individuals
had gathered to see chief guest Baroness Shriti
Vadera honour Asians in nine categories. Among
those recognised was actor Nitin Ganatra,
who received an award for his contribution
to the 'Food for Life' campaign.

in Public Appointments |

the 'BME Women into Public Appointments' seminar
held on 18th November 2009. They had gathered
to hear the experiences of Naaz Coker, Chair
of St George's NHS Trust; Sukhvinder Kaur
Stubbs, Chair of Volunteering England and
Parminder Vir OBE, a Non-Executive Director
at DCMS.

Awards 2009 - Southern Region |
The
seventh Lloyd's TSB Jewel Awards, celebrating
the successes of Asian businesses in London
and the South East, was held Saturday 7th
November 2009. Among the winners were Dr Kartar
Lalvani, Founder of Vitabiotics, Navin Engineer,
Founder of Chemidex Pharma and Rami Ranger,
CEO Sun Mark. Naaz Coker, Chair of St George's
NHS Trust was recognised with a Lifetime Achievement
Award.

woman helping to rebuild Sri Lanka with the
'Hansa' Pre School |
Indian
woman Lina Desai, has been helping to rebuild
Sri Lanka following the traumatic effects
of the Asian Tsunami in 2004. Mrs Desai raised
funds and founded the 'Hansa' Pre School in
the Uragasmanhandiya. Named after her late
mother Mrs Hansa Patel, who was a teacher
and keen enthusiast for education, the Hansa
Pre School opened in August 2007 and is now
at full capacity.

Women of Achievement (AWA) Award Winners 2009 |
The
achievements of ten Asian women were recognised
at an awards ceremony in London last night
(20 May 2009) attended by Their Royal Highnesses
The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall.
Businesswoman Vin Murria, who holds several
senior roles with multi-national companies
such as Advanced Computer Services, was presented
with the Lloyds TSB AWA Award by His Royal
Highness The Prince of Wales. The
judges said that Vin was a 'role model for
Asian women in Britain'.
