HOME TRENDS FOR 2005
by Carol Barton

Be Laid Back: Create a relaxed yet stylish look for your home with natural colours.Design experts are predicting a whole new range of home trends for the this year. And this may be because people are generally more aware of the importance of a good home environment now, and so are willing to experiment more with different looks, rather than just making do with more mediocre home interiors. The vogue for clearing out the clutter, to create a spacious, comfortable abode will continue, as will the use of simply lined furniture.

The accent on new design technology will be increasingly reflected in the latest ideas and styles in the home. The use of new materials, exciting computer generated patterns, dramatic lighting and practical home gadgetry are all set to grow in popularity in 2005.

'ECLECTIC' LOOK IN VOGUE

A La Mode: Art Deco lights and lamps are now very much back in fashion.Perhaps the most dominant design trend for 2005 is the move towards mixing different styles from different eras. Otherwise known as the 'eclectic look', designs from the 1950's, 1960's, and 1970's are big news for this year. Whether it an original 1950's Eames chair sourced from a reclaim yard or a copy sold in a department store, retro style is definitely where it's at. However, there is something very satisfying about buying one off pieces from reclamation yards. You can find all sorts of unusual pieces from a 1950's kitchen to art deco lights and lampshades.

But the 'eclectic look' doesn't stop there. It is also about interesting fixtures and fittings. Whether it's a 1930's fireplace and mantelpiece or a slate kitchen worktop, there are lots of ways of fusing old and modern styles to make a home look totally unique. Quirky objects, ornate mirrors and heavy chandeliers and wall lights combined with brightly coloured walls and boldly patterned wallpaper all add an air of flamboyance to a room. As well as reclaim yards why not take a browse around some of the many specialist shops such as Atelier or Modo Desirables?

But if you are not into flamboyant style don't worry. There will always be a place for natural style in the home - interiors that make us feel good, comfortable furniture and fabrics that inspire. It's all about easy living, creating that relaxed yet stylish look with natural colours, beautiful textured weaves and simply designed furniture. Not only that, it's also easy for you to change the look of a naturally styled room simply by adding accessories in contrasting colours and accents.

Add depth to the natural room with textured fabrics, floorings and wall coverings. Introduce a mixture of rough and smooth materials such as soft silks, airy voiles, woolly throws and fleecy cushions. Compliment these with rough floor coverings such as coir and sisal or chunky wool rugs. Decorate curtains and cushions with contrasting trims and be creative with some of the latest fabrics such as suede effects, printed linens and fine organzas. Paint walls in the latest ready-mixed effects to create the look of fine sand and chalk and choose wallpapers with subtle metallic hints or plaster textures. Opt for warm hues such as hazelnut, coffee and clay.

Go Clubbing at Home: Forget CD players….mix your own tracks at home with this stylish mixman. Many designers predict the 'retro look' with cheeky colours such as pink, orange, and red will adorn many a home. Appliances and electrical goods, decorated in bright eye catching colours, as well as decorative elements such as lighting, vases and fabrics will all be popular this year. Florals and animal print designs which have already infiltrated the interiors market will continue to grow in popularity as will the use of computer generated patterns and pop art that can be imprinted on tiles, wallpaper and fabrics.

Remote Control Wars: No more hogging the handset with this revolutionary 'virtual' handset.Dramatic lighting will continue to grow in popularity in 2005 from well-organised lighting schemes to individual lamps that make a bold statement. Lighting can have a huge impact on the look of a space and can be used in an unlimited number of ways. Finally as we grow increasingly environmentally conscious so our homes are likely to become increasingly eco-friendly. 2005 will see a greater emphasis on nature-friendly products, furnishings and renewable resources.

Revolutionise your the home this year with the latest trends.
